Work You Love
by Janet Bucke

We've all been told that with the right job comes
happiness, money and something called "the good life." This
may be some of the worst misinformation ever told in the
United States. We hear it all our lives from teachers, the
news, and our parents. We hear it most, it seems, from
people who hate their jobs. So how can it be true?

Right livelihood? What's that? Could it mean we're using
our natural creativity doing something we enjoy? Would that
mean we were willing to put in the time and effort to learn
more? Wouldn't we naturally grow to be good at something we enjoy doing?
Could it also mean that we are serving others
and giving to those around us? Yes, it takes some effort to
explore our skills and refine them into something we're
good at. There will be times when we don't want to do it at
all. It's work sometimes! Of course.

Maybe the trick is not to find the "right job." Maybe it's
more about knowing who we are and what we're good at. If
we do explore our creativity, find out what we believe is
worth our time, and then we go out and do it, we may
discover that our happiness comes from inside. Sometimes
people leave high-paying jobs as CEO's of companies because
they're miserable. The job was perfectly good. Maybe they
try something new, get a different sort of job and find
they're way happier without all that pressure. The job was
not the problem. A little self-knowledge helped them find a
better position!

I know a woman who wrote a fantastic book about doing just
that. Her name is Tama Kieves and she wrote "This Time I
Dance!" In another life, Tama was a high profile Denver
lawyer with a very prestigious firm. But she wasn't happy
there. So, she took a job as a waitress and started writing
poetry, something she had always yearned to do. The
inspiration in her book can help you understand the process
of self-discovery that may lead you to a much better life
for yourself.

What if you're just miserable where you are and you just
don't know what to do? Tony Robbins, author of "Unlimited
Power," says, "If what you are doing isn't working, try
ANYTHING else!" What's the worst that can happen? You
still won't like what you're doing and you can try
something else. If you realize you're in the wrong place,
gracefully take your leave and look for something else to
try.

I've even read somewhere that you could try a different job
every week until you find one you like. Does that sound
irresponsible? It really isn't. There is always a probation
period on a new job. It's just as likely that you might
find out you don't like the job as it is that the employer
might find out that you aren't the right person for the
position. It's a two way street! Kind of a foolproof way to
be sure, usually within 90 days, that everyone is satisfied
with the new arrangement. Sometimes you won't know until
you've been there a while.

Of course, you do want to try for jobs that you think
you'll really like where you have a good chance of success.
Once upon a time, I thought I might like to cook for a
living. So I tried a night class at the local cooking
school. I was wrong. Turns out that cooking is a mood thing
with me. I would not want to have to cook all day for my
income. But I do still love to cook for my friends and
family when I feel like it.

What if you just don't have a clue what you'd like to do or
how to get a job doing something you'd like? Well, if you
knew already, you'd be doing it. Get some help. Read books.
See a counselor. Go to a free workshop. There are lots to
choose from!
