Facts About Diabetes
by Nancy Holmes

Diabetes is a disease that can affect anyone at any time
in their life. If you have diabetes you will want to practice
as much self-care as you can. The more in control you are
of your self-care the more you will feel as though you are
in charge of your medical condition. There is information
about diabetes from a variety of sources, including your
doctor. When it comes to self-care for your diabetes your
doctor will most likely already be encouraging you to take
as much responsibility for your diabetes as possible.
Keep in mind that self-care for diabetes isn~t just for the
diagnosed diabetic.

If you are at risk for this disease, inform yourself about
its symptoms and keep a close watch on what goes on
within your own body. Make it a habit to see your doctor
on a regular basis. If you are diagnosed, you will need to
be diligent about your care, staying as healthy as possible.
Your goal will be to avoid further the complications that
diabetes can trigger.

Some of the steps in self-care that a person with diabetes
can do are:

1. Arrange regular check-ups with a doctor

2. Have eyes examined yearly to check for diabetes related
eye problems

3. Schedule a regular dentist appointment each six-months
or at least yearly

4. Stop smoking

5. Watch diet carefully - always eat a diet composed of
healthy and balanced foods

6. Care for the feet - diabetes can affect the way blood
circulates to the feet

Once a person with diabetes gets into the habit of self
care and helping to manage their diabetes they will feel as
though they have more say in their care.

A Diabetes Care Center is a great way to get additional
help from a medical source other than your doctor. A
diabetic care center is there to help you with all aspects
of your medical condition that includes helping you plan a
well balanced diet, help administering medication, help in
evaluating which medical checkups you should be
pursuing, and providing emotional support for you and
your family. Diabetes Care Centers are also there to
conduct research into finding a cure for diabetes.

Diabetes, a genetic disease, can manifest itself in the
later years of life, especially if an individual is over
weight and does not practice healthy diet and exercise
habits. If you are prone to the risk factors for diabetes
either as a result of genetics or due to your lifestyle,
schedule an annual checkup so that early detection of
diabetes is possible.
