Everyone needs counseling at some point in life. Counseling
is not a new phenomenon; it has been there in some form or
the other throughout the ages. Students, parents, married
couples; seekers of spirituality, all must take council
from an expert at some point in life. Student seeking
counseling to determine an ideal career for him/her is an
example. A counselor is an expert advisor and necessarily
has the proper training, personality and skill to provide
the same.
A minimum level of education and specialized training is
required to become an expert counselor. Minimum level of
education required for the same is college education though
specialized training has become the norm these days. Such
training develops proper attitude, knowledge and skills
necessary to become a skilled counselor. In some states,
license for practice as a counselor is also required.
Counselors can provide their services in a wide range of
professional careers, as well as both community and private
settings. There are those that specialize in family
counseling; where each family member may be counseled on
various dysfunctions that involve a part of or the whole
family unit. Some practice in marriage counseling; where
council is provided on different types of marital problems
or disputes that may occur. There are even practicing
genetic counselors that council perspective parents on the
likelihood of genetic disorders in their future children!
You can find counselors in every school, hospitals, your
local church, real estate office, and sometimes even your
local fitness club! Anywhere there is a need for advice or
listening, there are counselors.
Ending up at the realization that you may need to seek the
assistance of a counselor may be a hard reality to face.
The first thing to realize is that it isn't necessarily a
negative idea. Not everyone seeks the guidance of a
counselor because something is wrong. Often times, we find
ourselves needing to speak to someone that is not close to
a given situation. Asking the advice of someone
non-judgmental and unbiased of a situation as innocent as
what school to attend can be a good reason to speak with a
counselor. Other reasons can include seeking direction on a
new career, moving to another city, or any other reason.
Yes, it is also wise to speak with someone if you are
having difficulties in any other part of your life.
Choosing a counselor may be something you need a little
help with.
Hiring a counselor is like buying your regular stuff from
the market. What do you do when you set out in search of a
nice pair of denim pants? Bingo! Research the rates, the
quality and durability of the product. You study the market
well before taking a decision. Same applies here. You are
about to share your darkest and silliest secret with a
stranger, make sure you are comfortable with him or her.
Examine his capabilities well. Whether he matches up to
your level or not is the most important factor in hiring a
counselor.
You should finalize a counselor for yourself after a few
visits. There is no harm in moving to another if you are
dissatisfied with your current counselor. Do not feel
embarrassed for doing so as it is your growth and well
being that is at stake. Even the counselor wouldn't mind,
as mutual trust is essential for efficient counseling. Once
satisfied with a particular counselor, stick with him/her
and also refer your friends to your counselor.
Through your time in counseling, you will most likely learn
new coping methods and some new skills to make your life a
little less stressful. Hopefully, you will find a way to
gain a greater enjoyment out of life. Always remember that
you play an important role in the whole process. You must
not only find trust for the counselor of your choice, but
in yourself as well! Put forth 100% of effort and you will
soon see the results of your hard work!
