Hats Off To Fedora
by Pieter Chapman

In the 1800's and early 1900's all men wore hats. Farmers
wore straw hats to protect them from the sun while
businessmen wore beaver hats in a top-hat style and
cattlemen worn cowboy hats. There were social customs
associated with the wearing of hats, for example no man
would consider wearing a hat in church and men would "tip
their hat" by touching the brim with their fingers to
acknowledge the presence of a lady.

By the 20s, evenings were the only time to wear a top hat
and daytime was reserved for the shorter hat. This smaller
hat, referred to still today as a Fedora, has a brim with
various widths. Another strong feature of this hat is its
double indentation along the top of the crown. At the base
of the crown and attached to the brim is often a stylish
hatband.

With this general description, hat makers derive a multitude
of variations on the fedora by slight variations in: the
width of the brim; the type and amount of the curl of the
brim; the depth and width of the top crease; the depth,
shape and size of the indentations; and the material and
width of the band. Of course, fedora hats are available in
several types of fur felt and wool and a variety of colors.

With so many ways to choose a Fedora, how do you know you've
made the right choice? While some people possess the knack
to merely look at a hat and know if it looks right, others
need a few guidelines.

How do you fit a Fedora to your physical size and shape of
face? If you are tall and plump, select a wide brim and
full crown. But, if you are short and plump, stick to a
medium width brim. Additionally, a short, thin person looks
best in a relatively high crown hat. As for the shape of
your face, wear a wide brim with a full crown is you have a
round, full face. For those with a slimmer face, a medium
wide brim hat that has a slight roll and tapered crown looks
best.

There are additional guidelines for selecting the best color
of the fedora based upon the color of the man's complexion
and the color of the clothing being worn with the hat:

- Brown hats match brown, tan or olive clothes.
Nearly all complexions like dark, ruddy skin tones
and brown or red hair match.

Light gray Blue, navy, black, fair skin
dark gray, blonde or black hair

Dark gray, Gray, green, Fair skin,
blonde or black hair

- Think navy hats go well with any color hair and blue
eyes? Your right, especially if you also wear navy,
grey, brown or tan clothes.

- Don't pass up a green hat is you have blonde or
brown hair. This hat color looks wonderful with
green, olive or brown attire.

For business or the everyday look, the Fedora is a style
many people are proud to sport by following these simple
fashion tips.
